The Process Decides Whether Your Valve Body Leaks

Cast valve bodies — sand-cast or investment-cast — carry an inherent risk: microscopic porosity, shrinkage cavities, or slag inclusions trapped inside the metal as it cools. Most valves never notice. But a body holding a small gas molecule, extreme pressure, or a zero-fault-tolerance system will find every one of them.

“Casting builds the shape. Forging builds the density.” — We choose the process based on what your valve actually has to hold: water, or hydrogen at 70MPa.

Cast Valve Bodies

Sand · Investment · Die Cast

Shape formed from molten metal cooling in a mould. Efficient for complex geometry and large or high-volume bodies — the right call whenever a small internal void isn’t a safety issue.

Forged Valve Bodies

High-Temp Plastic Deformation

Shape formed by compressing solid metal under heat and pressure. Grain flows continuously through the part — no internal voids, higher strength, better fatigue life.

  • Dense, continuous grain structure — no hidden voids
  • Higher mechanical strength & fatigue resistance
  • Best fit: hydrogen, medical/breathing gas, aerospace, UHP
  • Bore can be mirror-polished with nothing to hide contaminants

Four Situations Where Casting Isn't an Option

Hydrogen & Specialty Gas — Anti-Escape

Hydrogen’s molecule is small enough to migrate through a cast body’s microscopic pores (embrittlement risk). 70MPa refueling stations, on-vehicle tanks, and ultra-pure semiconductor gas lines require forged stainless or specialty-alloy bodies.

Ultra-High Pressure & Extreme Conditions

Deep-sea equipment valves, control valves on 10,000-ton hydraulic presses, and supercritical steam valves in thermal power plants. Cast bodies risk deformation or rupture under these loads.

Nuclear & Aerospace — Zero Fault Tolerance

Primary steam isolation valves in nuclear plants, fuel supply valves in rocket engines. Reliability requirement is 100% — a casting defect causing a micro-leak isn’t an acceptable risk.

Medical gas systems, biopharmaceutical processing, semiconductor UHP gas valves. Forged bore walls take an electrochemical mirror polish with no hidden pores to trap bacteria or particulate.

A gas cylinder valve body sits at the exact intersection of everything forging solves for: high internal pressure, zero acceptable leak rate, and — in breathing applications — a direct line to human life safety.

  • Scuba / diving oxygen cylinder valve bodies — DIN and Yoke/A-clamp bodies rated to typical 200/232/300 bar cylinder pressures, brass or stainless steel, corrosion-resistant for salt water.
  • Medical & industrial oxygen cylinder valve bodies — precision sealing threads to CGA/BS/DIN standards, mirror-polished bore for oxygen-clean service.

Before a mould or forging die is cut, high-pressure and safety-critical valve body designs go through finite-element stress analysis — checking wall thickness, bonnet loading, and stress concentration at every fillet and boss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should my valve body be cast or forged?

Depends on the medium and pressure. Hydrogen, breathing gas, or roughly 200 bar+ / zero-fault-tolerance service usually means forging. Lower-pressure water, HVAC, or high-volume commercial valves are more cost-effective cast — we’ll advise honestly during the RFQ review.

Can you supply oxygen cylinder valve bodies for diving/scuba use?

Yes — brass or stainless steel forged bodies machined to DIN, Yoke/A-clamp, or CGA standards, with oxygen-clean bore finishing.

Do you machine the valve body after casting or forging?

Yes, in-house. Sealing surfaces, threads, and bores are CNC-finished to the tolerances your standard requires — this step is never outsourced.

What materials do you work in?

Carbon steel, stainless steel (304/316L, duplex), brass, bronze, ductile/grey iron, and aluminum, depending on the valve body’s service environment.

What's your MOQ for a custom valve body?

No fixed minimum — quoted on part complexity and tooling cost, whether that’s a short precision run or a bulk industrial order.

Can you verify the design before tooling is cut?
